- What Is The Purpose Of The Study?
The US 31W Access Management Study is a project whose objectives are to improve safety and mobility along US 31W in Hardin and Meade counties. The project is needed because traffic and congestion have increased steadily over the years. Vehicle crashes are on the rise as well - over 4,700 crashes along the 41-mile study section were reported between 1999 and 2004. US 31W is an economic lifeline through Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Ft. Knox - it provides access to numerous businesses, industries, governmental organizations, and homes. It is also part of the National Highway System and provides a critical north-south connection between Louisville and Bowling Green.
- The Challenge
For most of the project length, widening to reduce congestion is not an option and could have adverse impacts on businesses and homes. The challenge of this study is to develop strategies and solutions that balance safety and congestion benefits with impacts on business and property owners.
- Who's Conducting The Study?
This study is being conducted by the Radcliff/Elizabethtown Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), with support from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The MPO has retained the firm American Consulting Engineers, PLC to perform the technical work. The study began on September 1, 2005 and will conclude on August 31, 2006.
If you own or manage a business that has direct access to US 31W, please feel free to complete our business survey ( 50kb PDF) and mail, fax or e-mail it to us.
